3 Signs It’s Time To Replace Your Siding

While replacing your home’s siding can boost your curb appeal, it’s not just about the aesthetics. Properly maintained siding is your home’s first line of defense against the elements. While it can last several years, eventually siding will wear out and need to be replaced. That’s especially true here in Alabama where stormy weather and the hot sun take its toll. But how do you know when that time has arrived? Here are four signs it’s time to replace your siding.

Cracked siding

Siding that is cracked, split, or otherwise compromised needs attention. If the cracking is contained to a small section, you may be able to repair it. However, if there are multiple cracks or significant cracking that would allow water and pests inside, you should replace it right away.

Rotting siding

If your siding has begun to rot or if the material underneath your siding is rotting, you’ll need to address the problem, especially if you have Masonite siding. Like cracked siding, you may be able to make repairs if only a small part is affected. But if the rot has spread, the best thing you can do is replace the entire siding.

High energy bills

Did you realize that high heating and cooling bills might be the result of old or damaged siding? It’s true, energy loss and the increased cost of maintaining a comfortable temperature in your home could be a result of siding that has been weakened by external factors or that is past its prime.

Can I replace siding myself?

Replacing siding is more complex than you might realize. First, you have to remove the old siding, fix any issues you discover underneath the old stuff, and then install new siding. But really, that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Pulling the necessary permits, deciding what type of siding to install, purchasing materials, - the list of must-dos will quickly pile up. If this hasn’t given you pause and you’re still full-speed ahead, we highly recommend asking yourself a few more questions.

  • Do you have any experience in siding installation?

  • Are you replacing a section or siding the whole house?

  • Do you have an able-bodied crew to help you?

  • Do you have the right tools to get the job done?

  • Do you have time to replace the siding?

If you’re a beginner to DIY, have never installed siding before, or if the answers to our other queries have left you somewhat in doubt, you may want to consider hiring a professional that is well-versed in replacing siding. It may seem like you could save money by doing it yourself, but are you really gaining? The truth is, you may end up paying more in the long run.
