Quartz Countertops Vs. Granite Countertops

Move over Formica, there’s a new countertop in town. Actually, if we’re being honest, there are multiple types of countertop material to choose from and some have been around for quite a while. In today’s blog, our discussion will focus on two of the most popular countertop options in Mountain Brook, Vestavia Hills, and throughout the Greater Birmingham metro area – quartz and granite.

What are quartz countertops?

An increasingly popular choice for kitchen and bathroom countertops, quartz is an engineered stone made from quartz mineral, binders, and pigments. While not a natural stone product, quartz countertops mimic the look of those that are made from naturally occurring stones.

What are granite countertops?

Mined from quarries around the globe, granite is a very hard, natural stone that has been used to construct bridges, buildings, and monuments as well as to pave roads and used in a variety of projects – both interior and exterior. Granite has been the rage in countertops for some time- reigning supreme over laminate, tile, and other countertop materials. While once used mainly in luxury homes, granite became more accessible (by that, we mean more affordable) to all households after industry processes reduced the price of granite.

Quartz or granite countertops?

When it comes to countertops in your home or business, both are solid options. Here at Serve One Construction, we’re fans of quartz and here are a few reasons why:

 •       Extremely strong and low-maintenance

•       Stain and bacteria resistant thanks to their non-porous surface

•       Scratch resistance

•       Available in a wide variety of colors and patterns

•       Does not need to be sealed every year

We’d be remiss if we didn’t mention that quartz is sensitive to heat so trivets should be used when handling hot pots and pans.

Granite countertops are also incredibly strong but are subject to chipping and cracking. Unlike their quartz equivalent, granite countertops are porous and may absorb stains. What’s more, they are a higher maintenance product that must be sealed every year to resist stains and bacteria. Finally, when you choose granite countertops, you must embrace or at least accept the stone’s natural patterns and/or flaws.
