How To Decorate For Christmas Without Damaging Siding

While hanging decorations on siding can make your home fun and festive, if not done properly, it can also leave it looking a bit sad once the new year arrives. If you want to show the world (or maybe just your neighborhood) your Christmas spirit this year but don’t want to damage your siding, you’ve come to the right place.

Avoid drilling holes through your siding

It might be tempting but don’t do it! Drilling holes through your siding in order for your life-sized nutcracker men to guard your entry door, to hang Santa from a window, or to put up other jolly adornments is never a good idea. Instead try using a different décor-hanging method such as suction cups with hooks, siding hooks, or adhesives.

Having a plan is always a good idea and decorating for Christmas is no exception. You know the old adage, measure twice, cut once – well we highly recommend taking inventory of your decorations and draw up a mini plan so you’ll know if you have enough room or not. Also pay attention to the weight limit of the products you’ve decided to use. They must be up for the job or your home will resemble Scrooge – devoid of Christmas joy.

Before you grab the nearest decoration and go for it, you should clean and prepare the surface. Make sure the rubbing alcohol or whatever cleaning agent you’ve chosen is completely dried before moving on.

Once the surface is prepped, select the hanging product(s) you’ve decided on for the task at hand. Also, if you have nails in the mix, now is the time to put them back in the garage. They’ll be there for the next project, we promise. Once you have everything you need- start decorating!

One last piece of advice this Christmas season, don’t use Clark Griswold as your go-to decorating guru. In fact, if anything, he’s a case study on what not to do. Have fun and be safe (on average, there are approximately 160 decorating-related injuries each day).
