Should You DIY Or Hire A Home Improvement Pro?

Whether you’ve recently purchased a fixer upper or want to make improvements/updates to the home you already own, there’s one question that you’ll need to answer and that is should you do-it-yourself or hire a home improvement company? In an attempt to help you decide for yourself which route to go, let’s take a look at the pros and cons of both options.

Cost

There’s no doubt about it, when you choose to tackle a home improvement project with your own two hands, you may be able to save quite a bit on labor costs.  But, and there’s a big but here, what if the complexity of the job exceeds your skillset or your equipment on hand? You may end up paying more in the long run purchasing more material to correct your boo boos, buying new tools, or giving up and hiring a pro after all the frustration boils over.

Of course, hiring a home improvement pro worth their salt isn’t the cheapest option either. Sure, you could hire an uninsured Chuck in a truck to get the job done but if you want quality materials and results that speak for themselves, you have to be willing to spend a little more than you’d like.

Time

Before jumping into a renovation, ask yourself a couple of questions – do you have time to get it done in a reasonable time frame and is your time better spent on something else? While some home improvement projects can be completed in a few hours or a whole day, others may require more time which means your nights and weekends for the foreseeable future will be spent on the job instead of playing golf, watching the game, and hanging out with your family. You could also use up some of that vacation time from work but wouldn’t you rather getaway and relax?

Now, if you choose to work with a pro, you can focus your attention elsewhere and let them spend their time working on your project. And the thing about this option is, that it’ll likely be done far quicker, barring any material shortages. Experienced home improvement companies know what goes into projects and will make sure the necessary permits are pulled, materials are acquired, and will do everything to get the job done correctly and in a timely fashion.

Safety

When it comes to home improvement, safety is a must. Unfortunately, DIY projects can have disastrous results especially when electrical and/or plumbing are involved. Simply put, if you do not know how to perform a task of this magnitude, you have no business even attempting it. You could jeopardize your health, the wellbeing of your family, the integrity of your home.

What’s more, if you don’t spend a lot of time on ladders, use tools very often, or perhaps are older or less steady with your hands or on your feet, it’s not a good idea to take on a home improvement project that might require you to use the “tools of the trade”.

Safety first is more than a cliché- it must be the number one priority. A fully trained and insured contractor spends significant more time climbing ladders and using tools than the average joe; the safety risk for them is lower.
